The Best Sugar Cookies

These are the most delicious sugar cookies and I’ve been making them for years. I clipped the recipe from a magazine when I was in high school and it’s always been my go-to. Maybe it came from Taste of Home? Southern Living? I don’t know. I won’t take credit. But I will share it because it’s easy enough that I was able to make them with my very busy boy.

Look at that little hand!!! We actually had so much fun making them…

Sugar Cookies

  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 package cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream the butter, cream cheese and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolk and extracts. Combine the flour, salt and baking soda in a separate bowl. Add to the creamed mixture and mix well.

Flour your counter and roll out the dough. I usually have to flour my hands and my rolling pin quite a bit because the dough is pretty sticky. I don’t refrigerate the dough but I’m sure if you did, it would make it easier to work with. But I never have time so I just throw flour everywhere.

Use your desired cookie cutters and place the cutouts on a greased cookie sheet. Bake them for 8-10 minutes or until the edges start to brown. (I make these cookies extra thick so I always have to leave them in a little longer.)

The decorating is the best part! I usually use THIS RECIPE for the icing. It’s glossy and dries to keep your cookies lookin’ pretty. And just so you know, I never sift the powdered sugar. I just mix it all up and sort it into bags to decorate. This process was a little too hard for Grady so I just decorated them myself when he went to bed…

That is supposed to be a chick…

Enjoy!
