Spooky Spider Kit

My son’s teacher always asks for the parents to send in different things for classroom parties. Food, games, treat bags…..and a craft. No parent EVER signs up for the craft. It’s a blank space on the sign up sheet, begging to be filled in. It’s no surprise that when I enrolled Grady for school that I would immediately sign up for the class craft. It got to the point where random parents would see me at drop off and say, “Hey….there’s a sign up sheet. You gonna do the craft???” Since Covid became an issue, parents aren’t allowed to come in and help with the craft at the holiday parties. It’s an activity that needs to be sent in. I started sending in play dough kits because there’s no right way to do it. The students dig in and use their imagination. Not only that, they can take it home and reuse it.

Each kit comes with a ball of play dough, eight eyes, eight legs and some jewels. The kids can create the spider however they want. It’s open ended play.

Play Dough Recipe

Boil a small pot of water and add food coloring of choice. While water is boiling, mix 1 cup flour with 1/4 cup salt. Add 1 tablespoon of glycerine, 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and 1 tablespoon cream of tarter. Mix well. Using a ladle, pour the boiling water in a measuring cup JUST BELOW the 3/4 cup line. I find that if it’s 3/4 cup of water or more, the play dough becomes too gooey. Mix well and then lay out on a baking sheet. Let it cool and continue to kneed it until well mixed and soft and fluffy. I like to add glitter before wrapping it up.
